I’ve always been struck how Finance teams tend to operate on the fringes of a business.
At my last role, I was able to take a hands-on approach to the management of the business. As the business was effectively offering professional services, while I couldn’t offer an expert opinion to the client, I could get a lot more involved in creating “check-points” in the project to allow more invoicing opportunities and hence more cash into the business. I also met a lot of corporate clients, visiting their office, chatting through the issues to try to convert our bloated balance sheet into cash. Face to face interactions make a huge difference!!
The clients were claims departments of insurance companies. They were not finance teams. The finance teams were in a locked room at the other side of the building, phoneless and basically cut off from the real world.
A proper functioning business shouldn’t operate like this.
A properly engaged finance team can add a lot of value in maximizing revenues, controlling costs and most importantly reporting the reality to the decision makers.
